What each case is for
Title Case capitalises every word and is what headings and book titles use. This tool capitalises all of them, including short words like of and the. Style guides such as AP and Chicago keep those lowercase, so check the result if you are following one.
Sentence case lowercases everything, then capitalises the first letter of each sentence. It is the fix for a paragraph typed with caps lock on, and it is the house style for headlines in most modern product writing.
camelCase and PascalCase are code conventions: variables and functions in JavaScript use camelCase, while classes and React components use PascalCase.
snake_case, kebab-case and CONSTANT_CASE cover database columns and Python variables, URL slugs and CSS class names, and environment variables respectively.
How words are split for the code cases
Converting to camelCase means deciding where the words are. This splitter breaks on spaces, punctuation, underscores and dashes, and also on camel humps, so text that is already in one code case converts cleanly into another.
Runs of capitals are handled deliberately: a capital run followed by a capitalised word splits before the last capital, so XMLHttpRequest becomes XML, Http, Request and converts to xmlHttpRequest rather than xMLHttpRequest. Digits stay attached to the word they were typed against, so version2 stays one word.
Frequently asked questions
- Which cases can I convert to?
- UPPER CASE, lower case, Title Case, Sentence case, camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case and CONSTANT_CASE. Every result is shown at once, so you can copy the one you need without switching modes.
- How does Title Case decide what to capitalise?
- It capitalises the first letter of every word and lowercases the rest. Style guides that keep short words such as of, the and in lowercase disagree with that rule, so check the result if you are following a specific style guide.
- What is the difference between Title Case and Sentence case?
- Title Case capitalises every word. Sentence case capitalises only the first word of each sentence, and leaves the rest lowercase, which is what most body copy and headlines in modern style guides use.
- How does camelCase handle acronyms?
- Words are split on spaces, punctuation and camel humps, and a run of capitals followed by a capitalised word is split before the last capital. XMLHttpRequest becomes xmlHttpRequest rather than xMLHttpRequest.
- Will it fix text I typed with caps lock on?
- Yes. Sentence case is the one you want for a paragraph typed in all capitals, since it lowercases everything and then capitalises each sentence opener.
- Does the text leave my browser?
- No. The conversion is a string operation running on your device, and nothing is uploaded or stored.
