How to calculate GPA
A credit-weighted GPA gives courses with more credits more influence. Multiply each course grade point by its credits, add the results, and divide by total credits.
This tool accepts grade points rather than letter grades because letter-to-point rules differ by institution. Check your handbook before entering them. For an official result, follow your registrar's rules for repeats, transfers and pass/fail courses. See the worked GPA calculation guide for a complete example.
Turn the result into a study decision
A GPA describes completed work; it does not tell you which topic to study next. Use the exam study planner to divide the remaining material across your available days, or calculate the score needed in one course with the final grade calculator.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate a weighted GPA?
- Multiply each course grade point by its credit value, add those quality points, then divide by the total credits. A higher-credit course therefore affects the result more.
- Can I use a 10-point or 5-point GPA scale?
- Yes. Choose a 4.0, 5.0 or 10.0 scale and enter every course grade point on that same scale. The calculator does not convert between institutional grading systems.
- Is this GPA official?
- No. It is an estimate from the values you enter. Your institution may handle repeated, pass/fail or transferred courses differently, so use your registrar's published rules for an official GPA.
- Do all courses have equal weight?
- Only when they carry the same number of credits. Enter the actual credit value for each course to calculate a credit-weighted GPA.
