How to Calculate GPA: Credits, Grade Points and Worked Examples

The weighted GPA formula

A weighted GPA accounts for the credit value of each course. Multiply the grade points earned in a course by its credits to get quality points. Add the quality points for all included courses, then divide by the total credits.

If every course has the same credit value, a simple average gives the same result. When credits differ, averaging the grade points alone gives the wrong weight to smaller courses.

A worked GPA example

Suppose Anatomy is 4 credits at 3.7 points, Biochemistry is 3 credits at 3.3, and Statistics is 3 credits at 4.0. The quality points are 14.8, 9.9 and 12.0. Their total is 36.7 across 10 credits, so the weighted GPA is 3.67.

Use the same grading scale for every row. A point value on a 10-point scale cannot be mixed directly with one from a 4-point scale.

Check your institution's rules

Institutions differ in how they treat repeated courses, transferred credits, withdrawals and pass/fail work. A calculator can apply the numbers you enter, but it cannot decide which courses belong in the official calculation.

Use your registrar's handbook for official rules and your transcript for final results. Treat an online GPA as a planning estimate.

Use GPA as a planning signal

A cumulative number cannot identify the next concept you need to learn. Look at individual course results, upcoming assessment weights and the errors you make in practice.

Use the final-grade calculator for one course, then create a study plan around the topics that can still change the outcome. This turns the calculation into a specific next action.

Plan your next review session

Use the free student study kit to plan a week of revision, check flashcard quality, and record mistakes from practice questions.

Need a deck first? Turn a lecture PDF into editable flashcards, then follow the active recall guide to practise answering before revealing the back of each card.

Working toward an exam? Build a daily target with the exam study planner, protect the session with the Pomodoro study timer, or check your current result with the weighted GPA calculator.
