Rotate PDF
Turn a sideways scan the right way up and keep it that way. The rotation is written into the file, not just into your viewer, so it opens correctly everywhere. Rotate one page or all of them, by 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Your file never leaves your browser.
Everything runs on your device. Your file is opened by this page in your browser and never uploaded, so nothing is sent to FORKSAI or anyone else. Close the tab and it is gone.
Why your PDF reader forgets the rotation
Nearly every PDF reader has a rotate button, and nearly every one of them rotates the view rather than the document. Close the file and the setting goes with the window. Email it to someone and they get the sideways version, because nothing in the file ever changed.
A PDF page carries its own rotation value, one of 0, 90, 180 or 270, which every reader must obey when it draws the page. This tool changes that value and saves the file, so the rotation travels with the document into any reader, any printer and any upload form.
Nothing is redrawn in the process. Rotation is one number per page, so text stays selectable, images are untouched and the saved file is about the size it started at.
Which way to turn
If the top of the text points to the left of your screen, turn the page right. If it points to the right, turn the page left. Upside down needs 180 degrees, which is two presses of either button. The preview turns with each press, so you can settle it before saving.
Turns are added to whatever the page already had. A page that arrived at 90 degrees and gets one more turn right is saved at 180, not at 90. Pages you never touch are written back exactly as they were.
Documents from a scanner often mix orientations, with a few pages fed in the wrong way round. That is what the per page buttons are for. When the whole batch is sideways, one press of the turn every page buttons sorts the lot.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I rotate a page in a PDF and save it that way?
- Load the file, use the rotate buttons on the page you want, or rotate every page at once, then save. The rotation is written into the file itself, so it opens the right way up everywhere, not just in the viewer you happened to use.
- Why does my PDF viewer let me rotate but not keep it?
- Most readers rotate the view for the current session only and never touch the file. This tool changes the page's own rotation value, which is stored in the PDF and travels with it when you email it or print it.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. The page opens your file with JavaScript running in your own browser, does the work there, and hands you the result as a download. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no server copy to delete and no queue to wait in. You can check this yourself: open your browser's network tab, run the tool, and you will see no request carrying your file.
- Can I rotate only some pages?
- Yes. Each page has its own rotate left and rotate right buttons, and the thumbnail turns as you press them so you can see the result before you save. The rotate all buttons apply the same turn to every page.
- Does rotating a PDF lose quality?
- No. Rotation changes a single number on each page rather than redrawing anything, so text stays selectable and images are untouched. The saved file is about the same size as the original.
- My scan is upside down. Which way do I turn it?
- Upside down needs 180 degrees, so two presses of either rotate button. A page lying on its side needs one press: rotate right if the top of the text points left, rotate left if it points right.
- Is this PDF rotator free?
- Yes, and there is no account, no email box and no watermark on the output. The tool is here because FORKSAI makes study software and this is a useful thing to give away.
